Blog #10 Dissection

Why is dissection an important part of a biology curriculum?
The reason why dissection is important for biology is because it keeps the classroom more interested. Not only that but instead of seeing a  picture of it and trying to figure out how parts work and where they are, you can have a student be up close and personal with the dissection. For me when i dissected a cow eye and a squid, i actually remembered more clearly where everything was and how to dissect. Usually when you're confronted with something, you tend to remember exactly where everything is. It just becomes sort of part of a memory. So dissecting can be part of a good studying technique.

Which animals and/or plants should be included in biological studies?
I think we should dissect a cow eye, just because in past experiences its been really interesting. Also maybe dissecting a frog, squid, baby pig. Also dissect a fish, just to see how difficult it is since they are so tiny. I can't think of anything else. But anything really interesting and out of the ordinary would be great to dissect.

Blog #9 Community Interaction

Competition: Is a contest between species and other organisms that compete to live.
Commensalism:two different kinds of organisms that benefit from another without hurting it.
Mutualism:When two organisms interact but also get benefits from each other.
Predation:  Where a predator feeds off of its prey.
Parasitism:When one organism benefits from the other organism by damaging it.

Blog #8 What I Learned / Questions

Well after doing some of these recent blogs I've been learning about how this world we live in has so many biomes. You look at how much space a certain biome takes up, and what kind of characteristics it has, like what type of animals live in those areas. Also how certain plants live in specific biomes, and cant be found anywhere else. Also how the biomes were formed so many yeas ago. It just really makes you think about nature, and what it has to brign to the future. But our human race tends to be blind to the beauty of these biomes, and we decide that we need it for more useless space.

Blog #7 Two Biomes

Forest Biome:
1/3 of Earths land area
2/3 of leaf area of land plants
70% carbon in living things
worshipped in ancient religions
dominated by trees and other woody vegetation
there are different classifications of forests such as :
-tropical forest
-temperate forest
-boreal forest
Grassland Biome
dominated by grass
to types of grasslands:
-savannas
-temperate grasslands
hills of grasses and wildflowers
grasses and small plants
has some rain during the year

Blog #6 Which level of a food pyramid is the most important?

Well i believe that every single level of the food pyramid is very important, but at the same time i think that fruit is a little more important than the rest. It reduces the risk for having strokes and other cardiovascular diseases, and it reduces the risk of type two diabetes. Also give have nutrients such as potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C, and folate. Fruits basically give you a lot of health benefits and nutrients.

Blog #5 There have been 5 major extinction events throughout history, are humans impacting the 6th? Why or why not?

Well it is said that 3 species are getting extinct every hour. Which is a lot.... they say that humans could be tha cause for he 6th extinction but not completely our fault. It could also be caused by natural causes such as .....transformation of the landscape ...over exploitation of species....pollution.... the introduction of alien species. But i guess you can say that humans are part of the reason why.

Blog # 4 Describe the three types of selection

Directional: process when a trait becomes more common within a population
Stabilizing:  process where heterozygotes arew used instead of homozygotes,to maintain a genetic           stabilty
Disruptive: a change in the populations genetics, caused by extreme phenotypes

Blog #3 Explain what microevolution is? What are the three ways that variation occurs?

Microevolution is evolution resulting from small specific genetic changes that can lead to a new subspecies. It is used to refer to any evolutionary change at or above the level of species. The three way that variation occurs are my having sex, mutation, and crossing over.

Blog # 2 Why is fossil record hard to interpret?

i think that fossil records are hard to interpret because fossil could be very fragile.... and not only that but it could also be damaged through out the years which could make it harder for us to interpret them. It really depends it what kind of condition that the fossils are in. When recording the fossils.... it could get mixed up easily... and measurements can mess up the records. Most fossils look very similar to each other and for some regular people you might that think it is the exact one from before so they will just say its from the same time as the other fossils. But in reality it could have slight differences in them so ... they have to be really careful when trying to record these fossils.... cause any wrong move can mess up the fossil records.

Blog #1: Why is evolution a theory and not a law?

The reason why evolution is a theory is because it cant really be proven... its just something that we think is reasonable.... because its the reasonable guess  that scientists make because they have facts and so on. There really arent any facts for evolution because no one can really go back in time and see how everything was created... also i think that if it was a law it would cause a lot of controversy because peoples religions say certain things.. for example that God created two people and they started the human race..... and etc.... so i think if evolution was considered a law, it would ruin what people believe in. Anyway evolution will always be a theory, because it simply cnat be proven.

Blog #11 Choosing Traits

i dont think that parents should be choosing the traits that there kids should have... because to me its just wrong in so many ways.. this could be a great conflict.... especially between religions..... god made us a certain way... and its not our decision to determine the traits that people should have.. maybe the traits that they choose could ruin that persons life .. even though they are trying to give them the best for there kids... there kids could suffer form the choices that their parents make.... like in the movie they suffered because.... one of them couldnt have the job that they wanted because of the certain genes they had. that is unfair.. and in some way it could happen.. but it shouldnt be allowed because of the conflict....

Blog #10 Fermentation

Fermentation can be used to make some types of foods... for example we used fermentation to make kim chi.... we got cabbage... pieces of chilli peppers.. and after that we keep smashing it all together and it started to produce some kind of fluid... so after a week or two of the kim chi fermentating... it was finished.   Fermentaition is very important for making types of foods .. it helps with keeping the food fresh for a very long time.... like it could still be good after a couple of days or weeks.... which is a good thing.. because food would last a longer time and it wouldnt go to waste.

Blog #8 Biocontainment Facility

Well if you are entering a biocontainment facility.... you must clean your body with this special soap.... then you put on the suit .. after you wash the suit.... oh and before that you must put on layers and layers of clothes on... just in case of something does happen you dont have to worry too much... you put on gloves... and a helmet.... you continue to to this and you have to keep making sure that nothing goes wrong with the suit because if so then you most likely will die of which ever disease you are working with.

Blog #9 Government & Army

Government : I think that the government should have every right to do whatever they want in a serious situation, where peoples lives are being put in danger. As long as they are doing their best to keep everyone safe, its fine with whatever they do. Sometimes the government might isolate you if a disease like that ever  spread, and some people might have to miss work,  or school. But does it really matter? No as long as you are still alive (in my opinion).

Army: I also believe that the army should be very involved in this situation because they are also protecting us, and other people outside of the situation. If it wasn't for the army in the movie, those people would have tried to escape from the area. Some of the people who were even contaminated with the disease, could have escaped and go to another city, where they could have spread the disease to thousands of more people. It would just be a never ending cycle.
